We are especially excited this year to host several nationally recognized speakers throughout the conference including: Steven Garner as our opening keynote speaker and Cordt Kassner PhD as closing plenary speaker along with many other local and national content experts!

Speakers:
Steven Garner
Louisiana’s notorious Angola prison is the largest maximum security state prison in the country. But it’s also become known for its hospice program and, to a lesser degree, its prison quilters. Steven Garner was incarcerated at Angola for 31 years and participated in one of the nation’s first prison-based hospice programs, a program that notably incorporates inmate volunteers into the care of other dying inmates.
He moved to Colorado to be near family where he now spends most of his free time building on the quilting skills he learned in prison.
Steven has given keynote presentations at the Missouri Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (2022), Homecare & Hospice Association of Colorado (2023), and Louisiana ~ Mississippi Hospice & Palliative Care Organization annual conferences.

Georgia Landfill Operators’ Certification Workshop
Tuesday, January 23, 2024 - Friday, January 26, 2024The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel, the Georgia Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and the Department of Natural Resources/Environmental Protection Division (DNR/EPD) have developed a 30-hour training program leading to certification for landfill operators in the State of Georgia.
This course prepares students for certification or recertification. The four-day session covers topics such as state regulations, acts, and compliance inspections; the history of SWM; planning and waste reduction; site selection; design and permitting; landfill development; landfill operations; waste acceptance; landfill math and surveying; landfill monitoring; closure/post-closure; and much more. The course concludes with a certification exam.
The State of Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Act requires that all solid waste landfills in the state be staffed at all times by trained and certified landfill operators. The legislation also calls for certification of all landfill inspectors.
The law states that an individual seeking landfill operator certification must be a high-school graduate or must have completed an accredited GED program, must have at least six months of experience as a landfill operator in the State of Georgia, or must be employed by the State of Georgia for the purpose of conducting landfill compliance inspections.
The training will be held at The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel in Athens, Georgia.
Each participant will receive an amended training manual and a calculator to use during class.
In addition, The Georgia Center will provide lunch Tuesday – Thursday, and refreshment breaks each day.
Each Georgia landfill operator or state landfill inspector who successfully completes the training program will receive a certificate identifying her/him as having satisfied her/his obligation under the state law. Every other attendee completing the course with a passing grade will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
The exam is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Participants who fail the exam may register to retake it one time (during a scheduled Georgia Landfill Operator Certification Training Workshop) for a fee of $50. Those who fail the exam a second time must retake the entire course at the regular course fee.

12th Henry D. Green Decorative Arts Symposium
Friday, February 2, 2024 - Saturday, February 3, 2024The Past Made Public: Taking Stock
There is a wealth of decorative materials in the public sphere in Georgia. These objects and these collections deserve to be better known, to be studied, and to be universally enjoyed. Georgia has the largest land area of any state east of the Mississippi River and is larger than the country of England. It is geographically varied, and its history and people are diverse. Its history has produced interesting and aesthetically commanding material culture. Its universities and schools, its churches and synagogues, its public buildings and offices, its state parks and historic sites, its libraries and historical organizations, its cemeteries and gardens, its military bases and historic forts, and its craftspeople who make art in public settings exist as repositories of decorative material culture. They constitute a huge breadth of places, objects and activities that construct heritage for every Georgian. The 12th Henry D. Green Symposium of the Decorative Arts proposes to examine this public legacy and to assess its value to the people of this state. Speakers will explore the contents of museum collections large and small, public art, religious objects, and government institutions. Their topics will demonstrate the many fertile points of departure for research and scholarship.
